Tour overview
Mbeya is a region of many attractions but our unsurpassed treasure in the crown is Lake Ngosi, which is one of the most intriguing tourism hotspot in the southern Highland of Tanzania. Less than 30 minutes by car from Mbeya Town, tourists will find themselves in the virgin paradise surrounded by the natural forest and beautiful views of the Poroto Forests.
Lake Ngosi is among the lakes formed by volcanic activities many years ago and it is the second largest Crater Lake in Africa after lake Wench in Ethiopia. It’s found 38 kilometers from Mbeya town on the Tanzania –Malawi Highway district of Rungwe and Mbeya Rural.
It has an African map shape which makes it very special and interesting to visitors.
The local people who belong to the famous tribe called the Safwa discovered it. The name Ngosi comes from the Safwa language word ‘Ligosi’, which means big, before Tanzania Forest Service Agency tooK control, the lake was under the supervision of two Safwa clans, Chief Mlotwa Mwalingo who was ruling on the west side and Chief Mlotwa Mwalupindi on the east side.
Facts:
– 2226m above the sea level
– Depth of 70m
-1.6 km wide and a length of 2.5 km.
The lake is surrounded by the natural forest with 9332 acres with massive ecosystem, it’s a suitable home for many species including Three horned chameleons, black and white Colobus monkeys, bamboo trees, natural banana plantations and several birds species.

Without doubt one of my favorite hike in Mbeya.
Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the greenish and slightly cold of the mountain , with our Mr. Shah and Hussein as our tour guides we felt welcomed and with such a friendly atmosphere we had a fantastic start! The guide and tour was extremely good, very flexible (appreciate this!) and for that he deserves a special thanks. We had one great days there for we were in rush, which obviously also added up to the experience.
Hussein is such a warm personality and highly motivated guide (recommendable!). I truly enjoyed walking the two of us through the forest. The scenery was beautiful and it was a relieve to walk in such a quiet and peaceful environment. The natural Volcanic lake (Lake Ngosi) on the end was a great way to end the tour.
The atmosphere is so special that it really felt like home to all of us. All respect for Hussein who does a great job there; a true sample of excellent tour guide!
With stories about a snake named Nyamfwila made me and my wife think of camping near the lake so as to come across the Nyamfwila Lol! With the taste of water from the wild plantation added a new experience to us.
It was really great hiking to Lake Ngosi!

To get beautiful things in life one has to work for them, well to see the beautiful lake Ngosi one has to do a bit of hiking but all worth it in the end plus With Shah by your side the trip is fun and a memorable one.
I learned great deal from visiting lake Ngosi, I saw different plant species one being hagenia abyssinica, learned the history behind the crater lake and lastly I needed to upgrade my gym game.
If you get time visit lake Ngosi and see what’s your take
